Functional Scope of SLILG
The key objectives of the institute are as illustrated in Part 1 Establishment Act No. 31 of 1999 under fourteen items which were narrowed down to the following to accentuate the exigent focal areas which need critical attention in the context of current political, legal and economic context.
1. Formulation of programs to improve performance in order to magnify institutional reinforcement of provincial and local governance in partnership with Provincial Management Development Training Units.
2. Providing substantial assistance to strengthen the capacity of Provincial Management Development Training Units to formulate and deliver training programs to ameliorate the overall performance of provincial councils and local government bodies.
3. Functioning as a resource hub for Provincial Councils and local governments facilitating stakeholders of local governance with technical and non-technical information and resources.
4. Operating as the pivotal resource centre for provincial and local governance when liaising with relevant national and international institutions.
5. Providing custom support services for the development of human resources, improvement of management systems and facilitating organizational changes in the local government institutions.
6. Improving the performance of Sri Lanka Institute of Local Governance to enable efficient and effective provision of training, consultancy and research services to strengthen provincial and local government institutions.
